Top GTA V Mods

Jan 26, 2016

Since its PC launch last year, Grand Theft Auto 5 has been flooded with thousands upon thousands of user-made mods—so much so this is our third run at adding to an already extensive list. Since we last visited the scene, it seems the modding community has tired of what might be considered ‘sensible’ modifications—shaders, graphics overhauls, and the likes—and is instead revelling in ways to make the Los Santos streets more fun, silly, and/or dangerous.

On the last page, we'll tell you what you need to install your mods. This article was originally published on May 6, 2015 and updated and republished on September 17, 2015. We're always updating it, though, so check back later for more.

A warning before we start: Rockstar has clarified its stance on modding, and has said it does not ban players for modding their single-player game. Still, don't ever use mods in GTA Online, and to play it safe, don't join GTA Online with single-player mods installed.

GTA V: Liberty City

This mod transports GTA IV’s pseudo interpretation of New York City into Grand Theft Auto 5. Well, sort of. At the moment there’s not all that much to it—no civilians, no cars, no cops, no robbers—but there’s something wonderful about wandering around this faux Manhattan on your lonesome nonetheless. It’s essentially I Am Legend minus the rubbish plot.

Dragons V

GTA 5 has been treated to a few dragon script mods in the past, but none as sophisticated and fun as JulioNIB’s Dragons V. All the standard mythical winged beast credentials are delivered with aplomb: breathing fire, flying, snatching pedestrians and hurtling them into the air. You'll need the dragon models created by Quechus13, which you can find here and here.

Incredible Hulk Script

Much similar to the above (and its Ironman counterpart), this mod underscores the the entertainment value in throwing caution to the wind and tearing Los Santos to shreds. Doing so as the Incredible Hulk is something you really must experience, as the joy that stems from ripping lamp posts out of the ground and playing baseball and/or golf with police cars is second to none.

Funny Vehicles Pack 1 & 2

Don’t get me wrong, I do enjoy a cruise in one of GTA 5’s Obey 9F Audi rip-offs, but I’m equally partial to hitting the road in Walter White’s portable campervan meth lab, or tearing up the highway in the Mad Max Doof Wagon. These and more await those who enjoy the journey more than the destination.

Superhot Mod

Superhot is SUPERHOT Team’s effortlessly stylish FPS where time only moves when you do. Superhot Mod is a modification that applies this uber-cool mechanic to GTA 5. Naturally, this aids combat to no end, but is particularly useful when scoping out groups of gangs or if you’re masterminding an attack at distance.

Gang Hideouts

Speaking of scoping out gangs, one feature sorely missed from GTA 5 is Read Dead Redemption-style gang hideouts. So long as you have the OpenInteriors mod installed, Gang Hideouts adds over ten raidable enemy HQs, as well as a handful of antagonists—such as Corrupt Cops an Dam Hippies.

GTA 5 Pride

Los Santos Pride lets players celebrate Pride on the faux-LA streets in a display of colour, togetherness and unity. Backed by Stockholm Pride—the biggest Scandanavian Pride festival in the world—Los Santos Pride is the result of a collaboration between a host of GTA 5 modders and adds a non-hostile parade to the game.

Poke Ball

Poke Ball is Pokemon Go as you’ve never seen it before, yet is pretty much exactly how you’d expect it to unfold in GTA 5. Armed with six Poke Balls, you’re tasked with throwing them towards NPCs before the latter is sucked inside. Until weakened your captives are likely to escape, thus roughing them up a little is required. Once made yours, they’ll then fight by your side.

This massive mod turns GTA 5 from a sandbox criminal shooter into a more traditional sandbox RPG. It adds dialogue trees, character customisation, level ups and perks. Don’t expect BioWare levels of choice, but it does make the game feel more like something made by Ubisoft or Bethesda than Rockstar’s usual fare. Download it here.

The Red House

I can’t imagine anyone feeling that GTA 5 doesn’t have enough ‘content’ for their needs, but if you do then The Red House is exactly what you need. This pack adds 20+ new missions and a full three-stage heist, including AI bodyguards to back you up while you take them on.

Army at Five Stars

In past GTA games, achieving the highest wanted level resulted in the army being unleashed to hunt you down. This isn’t the case in GTA 5. The worst opposition you’ll ever face is a SWAT team and the FIB. This mod lets the army join the chase again, coincidentally giving the player a better chance to hijack military vehicles. Download it here.

Fire Breather

This is the fire breather mod. It enables your character to breath fire. It also works if you’ve used a trainer to transform yourself into a dog, which means you can play as a fire-breathing dog. Curiously, the mod does not make you fireproof, so caution is advised when travelling forward lest you run into your own searing flames.

Car Jetpacks

Flying cars! Lazy joke about how we were all promised flying cars in the 1950s! Anyway, while we didn’t get flying cars we did get giant virtual crime sandboxes, which is probably a fair trade in the long run. Especially as we can now put flying cars in our giant virtual crime sandboxes, with the aid of this mod. Huzzah!

Single-player snow

For those who want something a little more Christmassy than the traditional GTA V, this mod covers San Andreas in a fine blanket of snow. It’s called Single-player Snow because there is also a GTA Online version of the mod, but I don’t recommend using it until Rockstar clearly explains its policy regarding mods and GTA Online.

Custom Number Plate

Only vacuous, egotistical nonentities spend money on personalised number plates, but since that’s who you play in GTA, this script makes a lot of sense. Simply get in a car, hit a key, and type whatever you want have it instantly appear on the number plate. Now you can finally put ‘l33t’ or ‘b00bs’ on the front of your million dollar sports vehicle. Download it here.
